Organisation profile
The regional referral hospital for the Momase Region.
ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital in Lae is a Level 5 facility. It is the district hospital for Lae, the provincial hospital for Morobe Province and the regional referral hospital for the Momase Region, which covers Morobe, Madang, East Sepik and Sandaun and a catchment of about 2.8 million people.
Moana Digital Health works with the hospital in partnership with the Morobe Provincial Health Authority (MoPHA). Every department at ANGAU has been mapped with its Officer in Charge and team and is now configured in Moana, with go live expected in the coming weeks. The full engagement is described in the ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital case study.
Pathology at ANGAU
The Pathology department covers haematology, serology, microbiology and biochemistry, and sends selected tests to referral laboratories. Its results inform clinical decisions across the hospital.
The challenge
Closing the loop between the ordering clinician and the releasing scientist.
A laboratory result is only useful when it reaches the clinician who requested it, attached to the right patient, with evidence that it was checked before release. Each step between the order and the result is a point at which a request or a result can be delayed or lost.
The requirement was a single pathway from order to dispatch, with quality control and verification recorded at every step and the verified result filed to the patient record.
The approach
Mapped in full with laboratory staff, then matched to MOANA LIS.
The department was mapped from specimen receipt to result dispatch with laboratory staff. The mapping confirmed that the department’s requirements are met by existing MOANA LIS functionality, and the full test catalogue was configured across haematology, serology, microbiology and biochemistry.
The department note on Pathology at ANGAU describes the workflow in more detail.
Scope configured
From specimen receipt to verified result.
MOANA LIS is configured for the department’s full workflow:
- The full test catalogue across haematology, serology, microbiology and biochemistry
- Specimen handling from receipt through the laboratory
- Result pathways back to the requesting clinician
- Quality control recorded at every step
- Send out testing to referral laboratories
- Instrument integration through standard laboratory interfacing: orders sent electronically to the bench, and results returned to the LIS where reports are generated
Once a result is verified and dispatched by laboratory staff, it is in the patient record and with the requesting clinician. Release remains a decision of the laboratory team.
Because quality control and verification are recorded at every step, each released result carries a record of how it was produced and checked.
Governance and standards
Governance, standards and data ownership.
The work is aligned to Papua New Guinea’s National Digital Health Strategy 2025 to 2030 and proceeds through the governance pathways of the Morobe Provincial Health Authority.
Laboratory results are coded to LOINC, and the hospital’s data is exchanged with national systems through named standards, including HL7 FHIR R4. Health data remains under the control of ANGAU and MoPHA. Moana Digital Health maintains the system and provides support on site and remotely.
