ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital configures patient identification at the point of entry on Moana.
Implementation: mapped and configuredThe Emergency Department and Registration were the first clinical areas mapped at ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital in Lae. Identification, triage and registration at the point of entry are now configured in Moana, so that every later record begins with the right patient. Go live is expected in the coming weeks.

Organisation profile
The regional referral hospital for the Momase Region.
ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital in Lae is a Level 5 facility. It is the district hospital for Lae, the provincial hospital for Morobe Province and the regional referral hospital for the Momase Region, which covers Morobe, Madang, East Sepik and Sandaun and a catchment of about 2.8 million people.
Moana Digital Health works with the hospital in partnership with the Morobe Provincial Health Authority (MoPHA). Every department at ANGAU has been mapped with its Officer in Charge and team and is now configured in Moana, with go live expected in the coming weeks. The full engagement is described in the ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital case study.
The Emergency Department and Registration
Patients from four provinces reach ANGAU through a small number of entry points, chiefly the Emergency Department and Registration. Dr Sadi, Emergency Physician, is Officer in Charge of the Emergency Department.
The challenge
Identification at the door determines every later record.
Identification, triage and registration at the point of entry determine the quality of every record that follows. A patient registered twice, or matched to the wrong record, carries that error into every department they attend.
For a regional referral hospital, patients also arrive from and move between other facilities. The requirement was reliable identification across inpatient and outpatient care, with referral pathways and patient movement recorded from first presentation.
The approach
The first clinical areas mapped, on the hospital’s own instruments.
The Emergency Department and Registration were mapped first, with clinical and records staff, using the hospital’s existing triage and registration instruments. They were then configured in Moana with the same staff.
The department note on the Emergency Department and Registration at ANGAU describes the work in more detail.
Scope configured
Identification, triage and referral from first presentation.
The points of entry are configured for:
- Triage and registration on the hospital’s existing instruments
- Referral pathways into the hospital and patient movement between facilities
- Patient identification across inpatient and outpatient care through master patient index matching
- Duplicate detection, validation and audit
- Bed and ward visibility across the hospital
- Role based access to patient records
- Integration pathways for clinical equipment using HL7 FHIR R4 and HL7
Matching against the master patient index at registration, with duplicate detection and validation, is intended to ensure that each patient has one record across the hospital. Every match is subject to audit.
Bed and ward visibility across the hospital is available to staff from the point of entry.
