Why clinical research belongs inside the clinical record

Network feasibility view with eligible patient counts by site

Most hospitals that run clinical trials do recruitment the slow way. A coordinator prints a list of criteria, asks doctors to remember them, and searches records by hand.

Patients who qualify are missed, and the ones who are found are found late.

We built Moana Clinical Research to change that, inside the record clinicians already use.

Counts before identities

A research coordinator builds a cohort from inclusion and exclusion criteria: a diagnosis, a lab value, a medicine, an age range. Moana shows a live count of matching patients, criterion by criterion, before any identity is revealed.

The same criteria can be run across connected facilities to show how many eligible patients exist at each site, counts only, which is what a sponsor needs to decide where a trial can run.

Identities are shown only to authorised roles, only for an approved study, and every identity view is logged.

The treating doctor sees the match

When a patient in clinic matches an open trial, the treating doctor sees a banner in the patient chart with the values that matched. One click notifies the coordinator.

The alert never blocks the consultation, never appears in emergency or triage, and never appears for a patient who has said no to research contact.

The alert never blocks the consultation, never appears in emergency or triage, and never appears for a patient who has said no to research contact.

That last point starts at the front desk. At registration, reception asks once whether the patient may be contacted about research, and the answer is respected everywhere.

Consent and governance on the record

Screening, contact, consent and enrolment are recorded against each candidate, with who did what and why.

Consent is recorded against the approved form version and language, by signature on screen, on paper, or by thumbprint with a witness. Withdrawals are respected in every future search.

Datasets leave the system only with identifiers removed and with the principal investigator’s approval. The audit log is ready for an ethics committee or an inspector.

Built on the same standards

Criteria and exports use ICD 10, SNOMED CT, LOINC and FHIR R4, so a study defined at one hospital means the same thing at the next.

Clinical Research is a standalone system on top of the Moana platform, which means a hospital or a ministry can add research capability without a second database to keep in step.
